General
Manager, Geology, Hindustan Zinc Limited has made notable
contributions of base metals and other mineral deposits including
large open cast mines at Kriburu Iron Ore Mine of National Mineral
Development Corporation Limited and underground mines at Khetri Copper
Complex of Hindustan Copper Limited. His considerable experience in
planning, development, scheduling and quality control backed up by the
application of geo-statistical concepts and computer application with
data storage etc. has enabled him to establish lead zinc reserves of
60 million tonnes in Rampura Agucha area of Rajasthan containing 1.93%
"lead and 18.48% zinc up to a depth of 360 meters. This was achieved in a record period
of 24 months, enhancing country's lead-zinc reserves from 9.87 million
tonnes and 4.68 million tonnes of lead to 20 million tonnes of zinc
and 5.74 million tonnes of lead metal. Thus a single deposits has
contributed to 40% zinc and 20% lead metal in Nation's potential.Shri
Bhatnagar was called upon to re-evaluate all the previous geological
data of Khetri Copper Complex. The task was carried out on a crash
program basis involving a massive detailed exploration completed in
3.5 years. Its results are reflected in a report "Geology and Ore
Reserves Estimates -September 1971" which is valuable guide for
all future mine development and production strategies. Shri
Bhatnagar and his associates have worked at a production model by
Metal Accumulation and shown that there is a possibility of
discovering a deposit with double the metal availability of Agucha and
that it can be lone ore deposit in Banded Gneissic Complex. In
recognition of his significant efforts towards advancing knowledge in
the field of mineral exploration work Shri S. N. Bhatnagar has been
conferred the National Minerals Award, 1985.
