Department of Geology
Head of Department
Prof. P. Kataria

Udaipur is favored destination for students of geology & mining engineering. Every year our Department is visited by several groups of earth science students from various parts of India. We help organize their field trips around Udaipur and coordinate their visits to lead-zinc units  (Hindustan Zinc Ltd.), Jhamarkotra Proterozoic Stromatolitic rock phosphate project (Rajasthan State Mines & Minerals Limited), marble and serpentine quarries and processing units. Location of Udaipur in a geologically unique milieu and the ever-upgrading fifty-year old department are good enough reasons to have a web-site for geology. One of the distinguishing attributes of our department has been to utilize the latest technology for our research & teaching purposes. The web-site will facilitate interaction with earth scientists across the globe for our research, teaching and mineral industry works. Beside the faculty, our research scholars and students will also be benefited by this facility (labs@geolmlsu.org). Information regarding courses, examinations and  other activities of the department shall like-wise be handled through this web-site (chair@geolmlsu.org)

Besides working on several research projects and schemes our department is also visited by representatives of mineral industry for their day-to-day and minor technical problems. Many of them now have their own web-site. Through our web-site we propose to have more effective and time saving interaction with mineral industry to solve their problems. In the process our faculty will familiarize itself with the mineral industry problems and developments (helpline@geolmlsu.org).In the city itself an earth scientist can study sedimentary structures in Proterozoic Aravalli formations (1800 million year old) during his sightseeing trips to Fateh Sagar, Doodhtallai, Machallamagra.

Besides thousands of Indian and foreign tourists, Udaipur also attracts a large number of earth science students every year. Because of the rich mineral resources in the area, Udaipur has headquarters of several important Departments, notably, Department of Mines & Geology, Government of Rajasthan (visit their web-site www.dmg-raj.com for state’s mineral policy and mineral statistics); Hindustan Zinc Limited (surf one of the first web-sites of Udaipur for rich information at www.hzlindia.com also www.hzlmetal.com); Rajasthan State Mines and Mineral Limited (the company that mines and processes the world-famous Precambrian Jhamarkotra rock phosphate deposits, Jaisalmer SMS-Grade limestone, Barmer lignite etc., for details visit www.rsmm.com). Earth science students visiting Udaipur also visit our department to have a look at our laboratories, museum, library and to interact with the faculty. If need be, a faculty member or a research scholar escorts the party for a geological excursion around Udaipur (tours@geolmlsu.org).
